Frequently Asked Questions

I already have an engineering degree. Isn't the MEM degree redundant?
No. The engineering courses in MMM do not repeat undergraduate (or graduate) engineering material. Instead, they focus on what managers need to know about technology. As such, they enable technically trained people to leverage their backgrounds to become effective business leaders.

What if I already have a Master's Degree?
Typically 10% or more of MMM students already have a Master's degree. These degrees are usually in a technical discipline such as Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. The engineering coursework in the MMM program, which leads to the MEM degree, has a management flavor and therefore does not duplicate the courses of a Master's in an engineering discipline.

Can MMM students complete MBA majors such as finance, marketing, strategy and others?
Absolutely. The unique MMM curriculum allows for tremendous flexibility. Most MMM students graduate with two or more majors in addition to the dual MBA/MEM degree.

Do recruiters know about MMM?
Many do and as time goes on more are finding out about it. There is a growing list of companies who actively recruit MMM's for their depth in operations, strong analytic skills and broad knowledge of both business and technology. As a result, MMM's are consistently near the top of the Kellogg class in terms of employment opportunities.

Are the requirements for MMM different than for the Kellogg MBA?
The admissions process is the same except for one essay. MMM students typically have undergraduate technical degrees or demonstrate a high proficiency in quantitative areas. Acceptance is based on the same criteria, Application, GMAT, Essays, GPA, work experience etc...in no particular order.

Can I waive certain courses?
Some courses in MMM are core: required of all MMM students to ensure that everyone has a common background. Waivers can be requested for other courses depending upon instructor approval, prior academic and career experience.

How does the MMM core curriculum differ from the MBA core curriculum?
The MMM core covers all of the topics of the MBA core. However, Accounting, Finance, Operations and Decision Sciences are covered at a faster pace that leverages students' strong quantitative skills and prerequisites in financial accounting and statistics. In addition, the MMM core covers central topics related to the technological/operational side of manufacturing enterprises. Because the manufacturing design and operations core allows students some choice of coursework and because the curriculum contains a substantial number of unrestricted electives, MMM's are able to pursue the same majors as their MBA counterparts.

Can I take engineering courses beyond those required for the MEM degree?
Of course. MMM students are full-fledged McCormick students and can therefore take engineering classes from any department in the school. The MMM website contains links to some of the more popular courses. MMM staff are happy to help students locate and register for other courses that suit their needs.

Can I get an MS degree instead of the MEM degree through the MMM program?
No

Do MMMs take all of their classes together?
During the first quarter, MMMs take the initial set of core classes together. Prior to the start of the quarter the MMM class is divided among the other eight Kellogg sections for orientation week (CIM week). During this fun, yet intense week, MMMs meet students in the other sections allowing them to form relationships outside the section before classes are underway. After the first quarter, MMMs take additional MBA core classes as well as electives with MBA students.

Am I part of Kellogg as an MMM student?
Completely! All facets of the tremendous Kellogg community, including courses, clubs, conferences, resources, social events, and everything else are entirely accessible to MMM's. Indeed, MMM's get exactly the same MBA degree as all other full-time Kellogg students. But they also get an MEM degree and the benefits of being full-fledged students of the McCormick School of Engineering.

What are the benefits of the McCormick School of Engineering?
Managerially oriented technical courses, opportunities to work with world class engineering faculty who are developing technologies that present exciting business opportunities in which students can participate, access to laboratories and equipment that can be used to develop and prototype new products, special MMM facilities in the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center, just north of the Jacobs Center. The Design curriculum of MMM is housed in the Segal Design Institute, which is in McCormick.

What is MMM Student life like?
Student life is whatever you want it to be. It can be anything from just studying and spending time with your family to studying, in addition to participating and leading clubs and club activities, leading conference activities, and taking part in the countless Kellogg social events during the week and on the weekends.

MMM Diversity?
One of the core strengths of the MMM community is the diversity of the community. Students come together from across the globe with a broad spectrum of talents and experiences.

How do I apply to the MMM program?
Although MMM students are admitted to both the Kellogg School of Management and the McCormick School of Engineering, they only need to go through a single application process, managed by Kellogg School of Management Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. The application process is identical to that for the regular MBA program, except that MMM applicants should check the "The MMM Program" box on the Kellogg application form.

Can I transfer into the MMM program after being accepted to Kellogg?
Yes, it is possible for students accepted in the 2Y MBA program to switch to MMM, provided that their background (education and experience) is well-suited to the program. Incoming students interested in this option should contact the MMM Admissions, to discuss and/or initiate the switch.

Can I transfer into the MMM program after my first year at Kellogg?
Probably not. While not strictly impossible, it is quite difficult for students to enter MMM in the second year because they would have missed the core first year MMM courses. Furthermore, if they have not participated in the many community building activities of MMM, they will not be able to fully leverage the strong MMM network. Therefore, applicants interested in MMM are strongly encouraged to pursue it right from the start.
