Class of 2008 Breed Prize Winner:
Robert Warren Cameron III

About the BREED PRIZE:

Allen K. Breed (1927-1999) exemplified technology-based entrepreneurship like no other person. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1950 from Northwestern University, he joined RCA and rapidly rose to manager of manufacturing and design engineering. However, his urge to create drove him in 1955 to establish a division of Gruen Watch Company and two years later to found his first company, Waltham Engineering.

In 1961 he formed Breed Corp., a firm that developed and manufactured safety and arming devices for the military. Applying these same technologies to automotive airbag systems, Allen developed his first airbag sensor design in 1968 using his patented ball-in-tube sensor that became the basis for modern airbag systems. Breed Corp. eventually became BREED Technologies, a recognized worldwide leader in the design, development and manufacture of full automotive occupant safety systems.

Allen's achievements were continuously recognized by industry organizations. In 1997 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Automotive & Transportation Interiors magazine and in 1999 he was inducted to the Automotive Hall of Fame. A great believer in educating technically literate managers, he served for many years as an active and stimulating member of the advisory board of Northwestern’s MMM Program.

It is in the spirit of Allen K. Breed's entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, drive for innovation and devotion to manufacturing that the Breed Prize is given annually to the MMM student who best exemplifies the ideal of a technical entrepreneur. The Breed Award is given to the MMM student who has demonstrated outstanding potential for technology-based management, leadership and innovation. Selection criteria include academic excellence, strong creativity, and exceptional ability to synthesize engineering and management skills.
